Earth Hour -- this year Friday March 27 2 - 3 p.m.

Did you know that our schools and offices reduced their electricity use by a whopping 22% during last year’s special TDSB Earth Hour!!??

This outstanding figure compared very favourably indeed with the official Earth Hour results: an 8.7% reduction in the City of Toronto, and a 5% reduction across Ontario. Strong support at all levels of the Board made this impressive act of environmental citizenship possible.

This year TDSB’s “Preparation for Earth Hour” will take place on Friday, March 27 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Can we exceed last year’s 22% reduction in electricity use? How do we make the idea grow from a single focused hour to something that lasts longer and changes behaviour more distinctly?

Why do it?
Earth Hour is a simple way to remind us of how much we rely on electricity and gives us a chance to look at where we can cut back. Every kilowatt of electricity saved means fewer climate-changing greenhouse gases produced!

What does it involve?
For the TDSB Earth Hour on Friday, March 27th, from 2:00 to 3:00 pm our schools and offices will, wherever possible:

(1) turn off all interior lighting except necessary emergency lights,

(2) log off the workstation and allow it to go into standby mode.

(3) minimize fan use

For the official world-wide Earth Hour on Saturday, March 28th, 2009, 8:30-9:30, all schools and offices will follow the same steps wherever possible.

  1. Thanks for promoting Earth Hour! Another way you can recruit people to the cause is by creating a Earth Hour group on Commit21.com. Simply create a group about one action that you will commit to do for Earth Hour and recruit your friends, family, and co-workers to get involved in that action as well. When it comes to climate change, simple actions can make huge differences and Commit21 leverages social media to influence networks of friends, family, and co-workers. Check it out at www.commit21.com
